"I always say that Nick was born with a skin too few," said actress Gabrielle Drake about her brother, singer and songwriter Nick Drake, who overdosed in 1974 at the age of 26 in his parent's home in Tanworth- in- Arden. The film paints a portrait, through interviews with family and friends, of a brilliant but self destructive figure who passed away believing that he was a failure. If only he knew the resurgence that his work has received in these past 10 years or so and how many people he has influenced and continues to inspire to this day. An interesting note is that the bedroom that they use in the film is accurate, thanks to Gabrielle Drake, and has all of Nick's original belongings in it. If you missed the previous films in our Movie Lounge series, be sure to check out Festival Express, Celebration at Big Sur and Townes Van Zandt's Be Here To Love Me.
Hank Locklin, who at the age of 90 years old is the oldest living member of the Grand Ole Opry, released this tune in 1960. Skeeter Davis quickly responded with "I Can't Help You, I'm Falling Too" as an answer to Hank's song.
Miss Catherine Pierce of the sister duo the Pierces will be spinning some tunes tonight at Chloe ( 81 Ludlow close to Broome) from 10:30 pm on. If you are in New York, go down and say hello!
My favorite part about this video is the guy in the white shirt clapping along in the background (maybe the drummer if they actually had a kit set up?)...and the cowbell. Hallelujah!
This week's Mixin' With Mixtape comes to us from Shawnee, Oklahoma based musician Samantha Crain (apparently there is an Oklahoma theme today! First Tulsa Time and now this). She offers us her "Top 10 Songs to Listen to on a Steamy Summer Night While Sitting on a Bridge and Drinking Kool-Aid," which features tunes by Woody Guthrie, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Violent Femmes and more. Samantha is about to head out on the East Coast leg of the Hotel Cafe Tour with the likes of Jenny Owens Young, Thao Nguyen, Rachel Yamagata and more. Check out the dates and mixtape after the jump!
Cowboy Nick spun this song at Country Night at the Little Joy about a month ago and it's quickly made it's on to just about every playlist that I've made since.
The beautiful new video for Langhorne Slim's "Restless" has just been released. It's from director Joey Garfield, who's also the man behind one of my favorite music videos of the last couple of years, RJD2’s “Work It Out." (see below). p.s. The guy in the video was actually born with a degenerative hip condition and really does need those crutches. Impressive, no?
Another clip from the movie Heartworn Highways, featuring Steve Young. He's an amazing performer in his own right, but is also well known for his sharp songwriting skills as he penned "Lonesome, Onry and Mean" (made famous by Waylon Jennings) and "Seven Bridges Road" (made famous by the Eagles) among others. Look for the next mixtape in our Artists Go Twang series later this week for Steve Young's version of The Band and Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire."
Nashville Rebel is Waylon Jenning's first feature film. Released in 1966, the film features a 29 year old Jennings in the role of an innocent, but very talented musician who learns the hard way that the music business isn't all it's cracked up to be while climbing the ladder to success. Faron Young, Tex Ritter, Loretta Lynn and the Wilburn Brothers also appear in the film.
Southern Culture on the Skids, who are best described as a Country B-52s, will be playing this Sunday, August 31st, at the Grand Ole Echo. Tickets are $12 ($10 advanced), but one lucky When You Awake reader will get a pair of free tix. To win, e-mail whenyouawakela @ gmail.com (subject: Southern Culture). Include your first and last name in the email. One winner will be picked randomly and contacted.
Next up in our Twang Series, we are featuring the songwriting talents of Tim Hardin. The Byrds, Johnny Cash, Colin Blunstone (of the Zombies), Fleetwood Mac, Donovan and more take their turn at his beautiful and often haunting songs. Missing from the tape is Rod Stewart's "Reason to Believe", because do we really ever need to hear that version again? I think not. Anyways, enjoy! And if you missed our Townes Van Zandt Covers Mixtape, check it out here.
