Fine Tuning: The Black Keys' "Attack and Release"

Out Now On Nonesuch Records
Out Now On Nonesuch Records

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys return for a new album that delivers on the roots of this duo's true-blues sound, all the while developing a new depth of composition and production. It's the best of both worlds: Keys fans will dig the integrity of this album as a logical follow-up to 2002's thickfreakness and 2004's Rubber Factory, but also appreciate a depth and soul of sound not found on their tightly-structured previous efforts. (continued after the jump)

Danger Mouse (of Gnarls Barkley and the infamous Grey Album) is to thank for producing this latest effort and drawing out its developed lonesome soul sound, and his is a stellar effort. Producing a studio album with this band comes with considerable risk; it is easy to imagine that introducing a thick helping of some real soul instrumentation would stymie the raw intensity in which these two burn up blues tracks. Danger Mouse has carefully elevated the rawness that sets the Black Keys apart by setting each track on layers of support and a beautiful ambiance of sound that creates a more cohesive and mature sound. We have moved past the album full of barn-burning single tracks. The Black Keys have broken through to create a soundtrack that describes their essence through 12 tracks working together.

Check out "Psychotic Girl", "Oceans and Streams", and "I Got Mine" as a primer of what's to be found on this album. The truth? You'll probably enjoy every track. I sure did. It should not come as a surprise that a band this talented could produce such an excellent follow-up, but a quick listen makes this effort all the more remarkable.
